First grade at St. Peter's

Dual Language Immersion Program

In first grade, students continue building on the foundational knowledge and skills acquired in kindergarten—now through a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) format. Academic instruction is delivered in both English and Spanish, supporting bilingualism, biliteracy, and strong cognitive development. Core subjects include Language Arts, Math, Religion, Science, Social Studies, Art, and Physical Education. Students engage in a wide variety of reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities in both languages, with a strong emphasis on literacy and critical thinking. In math, students strengthen number sense, practice addition and subtraction, and explore concepts like time and money. Science and social studies units encourage curiosity through hands-on learning about air and weather, sound and light, animals and insects, and what it means to be part of a diverse community.

1st grade course content and instructional language:

Ms. Wendy wong

1st Homeroom Teacher and Kindergarten & 1st grade DLI English Teacher

Wendy Wong, was born and raised in San Francisco and loves living and working in her community. She holds a B.A. in Broadcast Communications with emphasis on Writing and Production and received her teaching credential with a Bilingual Authorization at San Francisco State University.

Wendy taught in bilingual settings in Suzhou, China for three years before returning to San Francisco to work with elementary school students. She taught kindergarten, first, and second grades in local schools and K-5 in literacy camps before coming to St. Peter's.

Mrs. Cecilia Gonzalez

Teacher's Aide

Mrs. Cecilia Gonzalez has been a teacher’s aide since 2008. She has a wonderful rapport with the students and parents and is a great asset to the kindergarten and 1st classes and St. Peter's. All three of Mrs. Gonzalez's children attended St. Peter's where she feels that they received a great education.

 
 

Activities & Field Trips

Language Arts Rotations

First graders participate in small group Station Rotations to practice literacy skills and build confidence as readers.

end of year mass

Students get to help conclude the school year by planning and leading the End of Year Mass. Students are responisble for all elements of the mass, and it is a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their literacy and leadership skills.

science investigations

We take an authentic, hands-on approach to science, and the students participate in experiements and become real scientists.
